Summer Reading: English 11
In preparation for English 11, juniors are required to read two works of fiction by American authors.
For a list of suggested titles, visit the high school Summer Reading webpage. You are not limited to these titles. Feel free to choose an appropriate book on your own that will go along with this assignment. Need help? Check out the Quick Links at right.
Students are to respond to each of the two works using the Reflective Reading format (PDF). Students are to follow the format and write or type out responses neatly. These reflective readings will be collected.
Students will be prepared to write an essay in class when classes resume in September. The reflective reading responses and students' knowledge of their reading selections will be used to develop a Task IV Regents Essay. This will begin our preparation for the English Language Arts Comprehensive Regents, which will be taken in January 2010.
Students will be discussing the following critical lens with their English 11 teacher.
"It is the responsibility of the writer to expose our many grievous faults and failures and to hold up to the light our dark and dangerous dreams, for the purpose of improvement." - John Steinbeck.
Students will be required to write about the two works of fiction chosen through the above critical lens.
DO NOT WRITE THE ESSAY IN ADVANCE.
Choose A, B, or C:
A. Black Like Me by Howard Griffin
A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry
B. The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams
Black Boy by Richard Wright
C. Choose two American fiction plays, novels or a combination of the two, which
have a similar theme. Students should keep the critical lens in mind when making their selections of their own choosing. See a list of suggested titles at the high school Summer Reading webpage.
