arrow icon Summer Reading: English 12

Dear students and parents,

In preparation for their senior year of English, students are required to read one full-length work of nonfiction during the summer.

For a list of suggested titles, visit the high school Summer Reading webpage. You are not limited to these titles. Feel free to choose an appropriate book on your own that will go along with this assignment. Need help? Check out the Quick Links at right.

Students are required to type a 250-500 word essay based on the following writing prompt:

Discuss one book you've read over the summer that has surprised, unsettled, or challenged you, and explain in what way it had this impact.

You should take notes on the book you read with this prompt in mind. You must use the book you read over the summer for this essay and you should choose a book you have not read before. Seniors should be prepared to hand this essay in to his/her English teacher during his/her first English class of 2010-2011. (A 250-500 word typed essay is roughly 2 pages long using a 12-point font.)

If you are enrolled in two English classes for the first marking period, only write one essay. However, it is your responsibility to hand in a copy of the essay to BOTH of your English teachers.

In the event that a student does not move on into the 12th grade, it is his/her responsibility to contact the high school guidance office for the appropriate summer reading assignment.

If you have any questions about the assignment, please feel free to contact the guidance office at 356-8320, or Mrs. Lisa Cutting, English Administrator at 356-8345.
